Christmas Cake for Andy & Nancy

Christmas Cake for Andy & Nancy

This blog is my holiday cake profile. Starting the Tuesday before Christmas, I had been busy baking (and most importantly decorating) cakes for friends just in time for the holidays. Since I took the cake decorating class, I have been crazy about baking/decorating cakes. It was a nice cake project for me to practice decorating skills. I had lots of fun. Also I’d like to thank my hubby Richard for helping around the house and with the kids while I was busy working on the cakes. Looking for more cake projects to come!

X’mas trees: sugar cones with leaves (#352), yellow lights (#2 or 3), poinsetta flowers (#16), star tree toppers (#17) then dusted with powder sugar. I made the Xmas trees first(leaves, lights and flowers ornaments) from bottom up until the very top, then set aside on rack. After positioning the trees on the cake then I finished up the tree with the star tree toppers. For non-icing cake top, I “glued” the trees with white icing to make them stable on the cake(and thus creating the “snow” under the trees!). Words: #4(round), 16(star). Crazy strings around the Romero cake: #2. Bow ties on Eppenberger cake: #16. Presents on Eppenberger cake: 2 pieces of chocolate squares glued with icing and string is #2. Basket weaving on Allison cake: #47. Rope border on Allison cake: #16. Hearts on Allison cake: #12. Bead border on Eppenberger cake: #12. Reverse shell border on Lupe cake/shell border on Romero & Nishihira cake: #16. Snowflake design on Andy/Nancy cake: snowflake ornament on top of cake then dusted with powder sugar. Dusted powder sugar comes in handy for creating “snowy” feel for the holiday! Colors used: Leafy green, No taste Red, Lemon Yellow, Brown.

Cake Decorating-- Basket weaving & flowers

This is the last cake from cake decorating class and we were learning basket weaving. The basket weaving is a easy and simple technique but time consuming. We were supposed to learn to tip other types of flowers before this session so we could fill in the “basket” with different flowers but schedule changed. Therefore it’s roses and sweet pea flowers again on the top. Overall, I am very happy with this cake and just can’t believe I made it.

Roses/sweet pea flowers: #104. Fern leaves/sweet pea flower stems: #67. Broad leaves: #352. Basket: #47. Rope top/bottom border: #16

Cake Decorating-- Roses

Cake #3 focused on rose decorating. Making roses is a quite challenging and needs lots of practice. We pretty much spent the whole 2 hours making roses. The instructor was very helpful. Even though my roses are always shorter and tilted to one side, each of them has a different look. I was joking that my roses are old fashion tea roses rather than the upright hybrids. I love the look of this cake. It’s hard to tell from the photo but it’s pink coating with same color roses on the center, with some leaves and few sweet pea flowers and simple shell bottom border. This is one of the cakes that makes me proud of myself. When I brought it home and showed it to Richard, he said,”Wow… did you make it yourself?”

The roses: #104 on rose nail then carefully transferred to the cake with scissors. Sweet pea flowers: #104 too. Vines: #3. Leaves: #352. Shell borders: #16.

Cake Decorating-- Clowns

Cake Decorating-- Clowns

This is the second cake from my cake decorating class– clown cake. I’m not big fan of clowns and honestly I’m not quite satisfied with this cake. I didn’t do too good on the balloons either. Oh well…

The clowns body is tip #16 (star tip) and same for the cake bottom border. Balloons are tip #12 (round tip) and the strings should be very fine like tip #2– I didn’t have #2 plus I squeezed too much icing that’s why the strings are bad looking.

Side tracked

I remember it was 9:03pm. I was at the computer checking our friends’ photos, and there was none. So I just randomly clicked on interesting photos that strangers uploaded to flickr. Then later I was searching for cake photos, but one cake photo leaded to other family pictures of the stranger(s). When I was at someone’s photostream, I just couldn’t help clicking pages after pages of the photos (good photos/boring photos/holiday photos etc). If there is a desdription I even tried to figure out who is who in the photos! Next thing I knew it’s already 10:41pm. All this hour and a half I could have taken down the Xmas ornaments, brushed my teeth or watched TV…

Yeap, this is me when I got side tracked. Crazy huh!?! ;P
